Handwritten letter from a son living in California to his father in Massachusetts describing his plans for staying the winter where he lives. Details include: the amount of cattle and food he has available, the price of flour, typical farming results in the Indian Valley (Plumas County), the state of his mining claim that he has for sale, observations on the various fortunes that people have met in California, and observations on the difficulties for new immigrants looking for work along the creek who "present quite a seedy and disconsolate appearance."
